I have this fear that the next 12 years are going to fly by. There is a fear that I am going to wake up, realize that I am 50, and say, "WTF have I been doing?"
If history serves as a snapshot of what my life will be like, I will have a lot of "stuff," and will have regretted not spending enough time with my family and friends. I will have tons of Amex points, hotel points, and airline miles - which is nice - but I will have more than I need to spend on myself or my family.
Based on my career path, I already see a number of people that could be me 2-3 years from now. They are Sr. Managers for life and are basically 'stuck.' For the past 2 years, I have been trying to figure out how to get unstuck. I've evaluated risk versus reward. I've listed pros and cons. I've read self-help book after book. At the end of the day, I'm still stuck. There is so much over thinking on my part, that I get an ear ache from time to time. (Don't ask how those correlate)
I know that like the organizations that we consult for, every person has a burning platform to make a change throughout specific points in their career. Or maybe they just need to be reenergized. I watch TLC enough to know that people make these changes all of the time. On TV, they seem quite happy. Or maybe that's just the edited version...
I believe that everyone has this feeling inside of him or her that makes them believe that there is something more in life. Otherwise you just end up cruising until that WTF moment. And then by that time it's too late.
It all probably comes down to defining a purpose in life. I can't even make decisions around my email, much less define a purpose in life. All I know is that time is running out to figure it out.
