When I stopped being a road warrior after 12 years, there was an adjustment period-- stating it mildly. Unlike many of my friends, I didn't get a raise when I got off the road, I took a significant pay cut. Adjustment number 1. I also realized that when I was home, I interrupted my wife's operational processes that she executed the four days of the week that I was away. Adjustment number 2. And finally, the work that I was doing was work that I had done when I first started in the consulting business. Adjustment number 3. The thing that I have to remember is that all of this occurred based on my choice to stop traveling and get out of a big Firm environment. You know how they say that 9 out of 10 startups fail? I think that 5 out of 10 consultants that decide to get out of the business actually end up in a better place professionally and financially than they were. One could argue that 10 out of 10 ended up in a better place...
