Tapping Out

When is the right decision to tap out? If I meant this literally, you would do it before you either passed out, or were seriously / critically injured in a MMA fight.  Since I'm writing metaphorically, this refers to coming to the conclusion that enough is enough and it's time to take massive action and exit your current situation.  I'm not talking about disengaging from your job or work (i.e., just show up, take orders and collect a paycheck.) I'm talking about actively searching to get the f*ck out of your current role or responsibility.  If you are like me, the struggle in situations like these is wondering if your next situation is going to be any better. Also, if you genuinely want to make a positive impact, you really want to believe that you can solve every problem and fix anything.  Before you get too far into a situation, stay present enough when you first start to notice signs of danger.  There isn't a need to list what th...

It's Harder Than You Think

The best thing about being a decision maker is that you are the decision maker.  The worst thing about being a decision maker is that you are the decision maker. If you are mostly heart and less brain, making decisions about people's lives is excruciating. And then you remember that everyone is an adult. (You should still exercise that power with great caution though) If you are a business leader, you have to not only check your ego at the door, but your soul as well -- that's what the perception will be and you have to be able to live with that.  The worst thing you can be is indecisive. Indecisiveness leads to stalling. Stalling leads to a waffling. Waffling leads to a lack of credibility.  When you are a consultant, telling people what decision they should make is pretty d*mn easy.  But when you are the one actually making the decision, it's pretty d*mn hard.

The Reason You Can't Make A Decision

You live and die by the decisions that you make.  Maybe that's a bit extreme.  “It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.”  -  Tony Robbins That sounds a little better. So why is it so hard some times to make decisions. It really comes down to the fact that you start to play out all possible scenarios after you make a decision and not one of them looks very appealing.  When you respond to emails, you are predicting the response. When you make a huge purchase or make a decision that is a life event, you feel the potential pain that it could cause -- both to your financial state AND emotional state.  It's natural to predict a worse case scenario with a bonus of negative consequences. It's why many of us are "slow to drag our feet," as they say.  The truth is that many decisions are not permanent unless you choose make them that way.  “A real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken a new action. If...
